Choose a place that works on an ordinary Tuesday

A pleasant beach matters, but a family also needs to check schools, daily journeys, healthcare, public spaces and how a home works in winter as well as summer. Benidorm, Alicante and nearby towns offer different choices; there is no universal ranking. Start with your children's needs and compare specific addresses rather than municipality names alone.

Editorial review: 31 October 2026. Schools, places, routes and services can change. Check current information with the responsible authority before renting or buying.

Five checks before choosing a neighbourhood

TopicQuestion for the address
SchoolWhich centres serve the child's education stage, and how does admission work in the entry year?
HealthcareWhich health centre is linked to the address, and how will you reach it?
MobilityHow long is the real journey at school time by foot, public transport or car?
HomeIs there study space, ventilation, insulation and safe building access?
Daily lifeAre parks, shopping, activities and family support usable outside the holiday season?

The Valencian education authority explains school admission, and Adminova handles the relevant school application procedures. Check the applicable school year and education stage. Living near a school does not guarantee a place or replace the official admission decision. The Valencian health centre finder by address helps identify territorial centres; individual eligibility and healthcare registration must be checked separately.

Test a complete school day

Visit at school drop-off and collection times. Time the journey from the actual home and note crossings, pavements, gradients, public transport and parking. Repeat in the evening. If you are also considering a second home, test a week outside the holiday period: the neighbourhood's services and rhythm may change with the season. Our year-round Costa Blanca living guide expands on this test.

The cover shows Benidorm's Parc d’Elx as an example of public space. It does not prove that a particular listed home is near a park or that an activity is available. Measure the real route from each property and check current opening times and conditions.

Examine the home as a family

Ask for plans or measure the rooms. Check whether bedrooms, study areas and shared space fit everyone's daily routine. Inspect ventilation, shade, noise, lift access, pram access and storage. A listing marked 'family friendly' cannot replace a visit. If you plan to buy, check title and documents as explained in our foreign buyer's Costa Blanca guide.

For the budget, separate housing, building fees, utilities, transport, school meals, activities and family travel. Test school-term and holiday scenarios. Our Benidorm and Alicante cost of living guide offers seven budget lines and three scenarios without invented local prices.

A repeatable decision worksheet

  • List three candidate addresses, not only three towns.
  • Record children's ages and education stages in the planned moving year.
  • Check school admission and health centre information from official portals for each address.
  • Make the journeys at the actual time and record when you tested them.
  • Score home, mobility, services and budget against your family's priorities, but mark unknowns as pending.
  • Before signing, verify school places, migration or healthcare status, and property documents with the relevant authorities or qualified professionals.

If you are considering Marina Baixa, our Benidorm–Finestrat–Villajoyosa comparison separates town, neighbourhood and lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying near a school guarantee a place?

No. Check the admission process and official decision for the relevant year. Distance is one factor in your family's choice, not a promise of admission.

Is a summer visit enough?

It helps, but it is insufficient for a year-round move. Repeat the visit on a school day outside the holiday season.

Which family cost is easy to overlook?

The daily journey and the cost of maintaining the home all year. Record them using your own routes and bills for the actual property.
