Moving to Alicante from abroad: residence, schools, healthcare and housing

Moving to Alicante involves several separate decisions. Buying or renting a home does not, by itself, confer residence rights or healthcare cover. This guide was reviewed on 1 November 2026 and is a planning checklist, not a decision on any family's immigration, education or health entitlement.
Before moving: the right to stay
Check each family member's nationality, intended length of stay and grounds for residence. EU citizens planning to stay longer than three months may need to register and satisfy conditions relating to resources and health insurance. The Spanish administration explains the EU resident registration process. Rules for non-EU citizens depend on nationality and purpose. Ownership and a NIE do not replace an applicable visa or authorisation. Our guide to living in Spain for several months separates immigration status from tax residence.
Choose a home around a workable routine
Map work, school, healthcare, transport and the practical need for a car. Test the journey on school days and outside the holiday season. A summer viewing cannot tell you how a neighbourhood works in November. If you have not chosen a municipality, temporary accommodation may give you time to verify schools and services before buying. Compare community fees, insurance and upkeep as well as the listing price.
Municipal register and school admission
The municipal register records habitual address; it does not grant immigration status. Alicante City Council publishes the registration and change-of-address procedure, including appointment and document requirements. Prepare identity documents, family records, school reports and proof of address. Ask the school or education authority whether translations or recognition of earlier studies are necessary in your case. The Spanish education ministry's ESO guidance says that a pupil entering from a foreign system is placed considering age, circumstances, knowledge and academic history. Admission dates and available places must be checked for the current school year; a particular school cannot be guaranteed.
Health cover before the first appointment
Establish what covers each person before travel: a home-country system, European Health Insurance Card, bilateral arrangement, recognised Spanish entitlement or private insurance. The Valencian health authority explains SIP registration and documents by situation. A SIP number alone does not mean that everyone has the same entitlement. Find the health centre for your address and check prescriptions and continuing treatment in advance.
| Stage | Useful action | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Before travel | Check lawful stay and health cover | Buying grants residence |
| Once settled | Check municipal registration | The register legalises a stay |
| Before enrolment | Confirm school process and vacancies | A named school has a place |
| First week | Confirm SIP and health centre | Every card confers equal cover |
Common questions
Can I buy before obtaining residence?
A property purchase and permission to remain are different questions. Check identity, finance and residence requirements separately before signing.
Does municipal registration guarantee a school place?
No. It establishes an address; admission follows the applicable procedure and available capacity.
When should I choose a permanent home?
After testing journeys and understanding neighbourhood services and costs. BeniHomes can compare verified homes, without promising a school place or immigration result.
